She was old enough to conjure up mountains as a metaphor, though not yet old enough to have ever seen a mountain in person. Genavieve Scott tells the story of giving birth, and walking away. Genavieve created an image of mountains and rivers in the process. There are precise details she remembers, and others that might seem important that she forgets. It's a moment in time that is rich in meaning.

This story was one of nine told at our Story Night of Champions in July. It was considered by the judges to be the top story of the night.

The song for this episode comes from Anne Murray. It's You Needed Me.

Thank you for listening. We look forward to hearing your story.

48: Margaret Loveless — What Won't a Stepmom Do?

Mother and child

In one part of this story Margaret Loveless said she wasn't sure the decision she made did any good. That seems to be the question behind every decision a parent makes. Do the decisions we make serve the higher good?

It sounds cliche, but it was only through becoming a parent that I realized the uncertainty behind the decisions my parents made. They seemed firm in their resolve, but afterwards I have to believe they talked about what they were doing with us, hoping against everything that it would prove to serve us.

In Margaret's case, the big decision affected most two daughters from her husband Kent's prior marriage. She went from a life of single independence to marriage and two daughters, then had a few of her own. Life changed quickly.

The song for this episode is I Got You by Ciara.

Corinne Nichol had spent enough time as an ER nurse to know that she had — There is no better way to say it — spent enough time as an ER nurse. Her next iteration as a nurse, however, gave her what some call the "dreaded disease of perspective." She met people who gave her a different view of what she had seen as her suffering.

Corinne told this story in July 2017 at our Story Night of Champions. It was a night rich with perspective, and perspectives on "sacrifice," the night's theme.

The music is from Death Cab for Cutie. The song is "What Sarah Said."

Thank you for listening.

We look forward to hearing your story.
